Eastern Adam Wydra

Adam Wydra was born in Poland on the 24th of December, 1953. After finishing secondary school, Adam worked in a milk factory for two years and then at a shoe factory for two years. In 1973 he married Jadwiga Suska, the sister of the well known Stanislaw Suska. In 1975 they moved in with her father, the well known carver, Waclaw Suska. Together Adam worked with Waclaw on his farm. Two years later Adam purchased a piece of land and began to farm strawberries. During this time of his life he became fascinated with folk-art carvings of his father-in-law. After a short time, the farm was not profitable. At this time Waclaw began to teach Adam how to carve. Adam began to carve and sell his pieces to a folk-art dealer in Warsaw. AdamÕs sculptures were very similar to Waclaw SuskaÕs in his early days. Eventually Adam developed his own individual style.

Adam almost always carves his pieces from one piece of wood. He does not use a knife to carve but two chisels. When he carves he does not look at any sort of drawing or picture, but he carves from his imagination by penciling on the wood itself. He starts out using a hammer and a large chisel. His wife, Jadwiga is the one who finishes all of his carvings, doing some small alterations and painting them. Most of the pieces that Adam carves are religious or scenes from everyday life like most of the Polish folk artists.

Adam has competed in many folk-art contest throughout Poland. He has sold his carvings all over the world. His work is displayed in museums in cities all over Poland and in the USA. His art has been displayed in contests in Hungary, Portugal, Spain and Finland.
