Janusz Mostyl Janusz was born on the 21st of November, 1952. He was born in the village of Rzekun, just outside of the city of Ostroleko. There are five people in his family. His father was a veteran of WWII. When Janusz was 7 years old he began attending school. He remembers those school days and how his imagination was sparked by his simple surroundings. These images in his imagination would soon become the basis for his passion of sculpturing. When he was 11 years old he began to carve. He would cut the wood himself to prep it for sculpturing because there was nowhere to just go and buy prepped wood for carving. After Janusz finished his basic schooling, his parents sent him to a school in Zakopane, to learn how to sculpt. After two years at the school, he felt as if they could not teach him further. Out of all of his classmates, he was the most skilled. Being still quite young, Janusz longed for home which lied about 600 kilometers to the north. After returning home he finished his schooling. At about this time all young men are required to join the army for at least 2 years. Janusz was able to avoid this by going to work in the coal mines of Silesia. While he was working there he began to sculpt from coal. His stay in the coal mines only lasted for the two years. He then once again returned to his home town and that is when he met his wife Bogusia. They were married in 1978. About a year later they had their first child, a little girl which they named Isabella. Four years later they had a second child and named him Jacob. Then in 1985, tragedy struck. Bogusia was diagnosed with cancer. The Mostyl family acclaims her survival as an act of God. Since 1977 Janusz has been recognized by the Minister of Culture and Art in Poland. Since that time Janusz has competed and won many different sculpting contests. Much of his professional carving career has been spent carving large pieces for the numberless Catholic churches scattered through Poland. He also spends a lot of time carving custom pieces for patrons in Germany, the United States and several other countries. His art is displayed not only in churches but in museums in Poland and in the museums around the world. Janusz loves what he does for a living and he says that if God will permit, he will carve all the days of his life. He believes that his best carvings are still yet to come. Janusz and his family are wonderful people. Just this past summer my wife and I had the opportunity to spend some time with the Mostyl family. His passion for carving was extremely eminent. His house was scattered with religious carvings which were so detailed that it was hard to believe that they were not just molded out of plastic and made to look like wood. We hope that those of you who have the opportunity to examine the art of Janusz Mostyl, can find the depth and meaning that he so carefully inscribes. |
